Southeast Asian archaeology is entering an exciting period of expansion with new discoveries and understandings. At the same time, archaeological sites are being destroyed by looting and development at an ever increasing rate. After outlining some trends in Asian archaeological research including her current work in Laos, Dr. White will present behind-the-scenes insights into recent investigations by the US Justice Department into the smuggling of looted antiquities from Thailand into the United States, especially from Ban Chiang culture sites. This legal case is one of the largest cases of this kind to date. Both the difficulties and successes of the case will be illustrated. The presentation will conclude with discussion of paths forward.
